Samana & Las Terrenas
The peninsula of Samana is situated on the far east side of the Dominican North coast and is about 60 km wide.
In the early seventeenth century it was a slave trade port for the British and still many people originally from this part of the island have English family names.
These days, inhabitants are an exotic mix of African and West Indian slaves, Tainos, Spanish, and the new generation of European and American expats.
Samana is world famous for the humpback whales who visit the bay every winter to mate and have their calves away from the cold up north. Between December and March, you can see these impressive animals in the warm waters off the coast of Samana.
Humpback whales are very playful and it’s fascinating to watch these incredible creatures of nature in the wild. Banco de Plata in Samana has become a sanctuary, and the Dominican government has very strict laws to protect and ensure the safety and conservation of the humpback whales.
Just off the coast of Samana, about a 20-minute boat ride, you can visit Cayo Levantado also known as the Bounty island, from the famous TV commercial!
Although very small, it is the perfect place to spend a day snorkeling, swimming, or sipping a coco loco and staring at the white sand beaches and the crystal clear waters.
Do not forget to visit National Park Los Haitises, a natural reserve that houses many caves with petroglyphs stamped by the Taino Indians the original inhabitants of the Caribbean.
Las Terrenas used to be a small fishermen’s village, but over the years it slowly transformed into a beach town with bars, restaurants, and shops, a true gem in paradise.
Thanks to the new highway, Las Terrenas is only a 2-hour drive away from Santo Domingo, the capital of the island.
Although Las Terrenas attracts many foreigners who want to live in nature, in 2013 the new aqueduct was installed, as well as optic fiber for TV and internet.
Both Las Terrenas and Samana have many opportunities to live a beautiful life: unspoiled lots, newly constructed villas, and hotels are in our portfolio.
