La Isabella, Montecristi & Luperon
La Isabella was founded by Christopher Columbus during his second voyage to the Americas in 1493.
It is the first Spanish town in the New World, named after Queen Isabella of Spain, and about 45 km to the west of Puerto Plata.
The ruins of this settlement are now a national park, and the historic museum is definitely worth a visit.
Luperon is a charming coastal village with a beautiful bay, and due to its ideal location, many yachts and boats anchor here for shelter from storms in the Atlantic Ocean.
The village is an attractive vacation destination thanks to its gorgeous beaches.
Cayo Arena, also known as Paradise Island, is the tiny island offshore this coast and an excellent place to go snorkeling or diving. Swimming in a natural pool in aqua blue waters in the middle of the ocean, and hundreds of species of different marine life make a trip to this tiny sandbank with corals and sponges an unforgettable memory!
In the same area is Punta Rucia Beach, a quiet area for nature lovers with many little bars and restaurants all along the coast. Make a boat trip to spot manatees at the Estero Hondo’s Manatees National Park among the mangroves or go hiking to the lagoon.
Monte Cristi has a unique climate with a dry subtropical forest landscape, and El Morro mountain, with a height of 242 meters (794ft), is an impressive landmark. You should definitely tour the salt ponds of Monte Cristi, which show spectacular colors and have been a source of income for the inhabitants of the city for ages.
