Noooo, amigo, you don’t need to speak Spanish to live in the Dominican Republic.
Many international buyers choose areas where there is a wonderful international community, and where English is commonly spoken because tourists and foreign residents are part of everyday life. Dominicans are smart, curious and have a real knack for languages, so you will find many people who speak anything from basic to fluent English.
And did you know that many Dominicans have lived in the United States or Canada? You may meet them here and end up having some very interesting conversations.

That said, being able to have a conversation in Spanish will make your life in the Dominican Republic even more enjoyable. You don’t need to become fluent before you arrive, so start small with an app and practise for about 20 minutes every day. Learning a language is much more about repetition than sitting through one or two hours of lessons once a week.
Twenty minutes every day can honestly be much more effective, and it feels far less like studying.

One app I personally love is Memrise, which you can simply download on your phone.
It makes practising Spanish fun and useful because you learn words and phrases you can actually use in daily life. Imagine ordering a cocktail, chatting with your neighbours, visiting a church, or buying fresh fruit from one of the pickup trucks passing by your house.
Those little everyday conversations are where your Spanish really starts to come alive.

There is one important thing you should know before buying property in the Dominican Republic: the official legal language is Spanish.
That means your contracts and important legal documents will be written in Spanish, which can understandably feel intimidating if you don’t speak or read the language yet.
But this is exactly why having the right people around you matters when buying property abroad.
You should never feel pressured to blindly sign an important document that you cannot understand.

And that is where I come in. With Colorful Casas, I accompany you through the process and connect you with a trusted Dominican lawyer who can explain the legal documents and provide the support you need in a language you understand.
You don’t have to speak Spanish to buy a home or build a life in the Dominican Republic, but learning some Spanish will open many more doors once you are here.
Start with a few minutes every day, keep practising, and before you know it, you’ll be ordering that cocktail in Spanish. Salud!
